German tennis player Alexander Zverev also won the second ATP tournament in Cologne. The world number seven beat Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6: 2, 6: 1. A week earlier he had already won his first title at the Lanxess-Arena in the same place. It is Zverev’s thirteenth victory in the professional tournament.

In the final, Schwartzman, second to Zverev in Cologne, made one mistake after another. Zverev dominated the rallies and stayed focused even when his opponent was furious. With a score of 5: 1 and 0:15 in the second set, Zverev beat a winner with 175 km / h, it was the fastest basic stroke of the tournament. Schwartzman, actually known as the tour’s endurance runner, didn’t even react. At this point, at the latest, the game was decided.

For Zverev, the season is not over yet. The 23-year-old will start at the Indoor Masters in Paris on November 2, and the season finale will begin in London on November 15.

Tennis novelty in Cologne

In Cologne, for the first time in the history of the ATP Tour, two international professional tournaments were held one after the other in the same venue. In the final of the first tournament, Zverev had won against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final. Without the crown crisis, the so-called double in the cathedral would not have been possible, the two tournaments in Cologne only made it onto the ATP calendar at short notice after the Asian tour was canceled.

Tournament director Barbara Rittner brought Cologne’s return to the game on Saturday. “I hope we are not here for the last time. And I would like to be there again,” said the national coach of the German Tennis Association (DTB). Organizer Edwin Weindorfer was a bit more cautious: “We would love to come back, but at times like these you have to wait and see what the tournament schedule for 2021 looks like. That’s a big question mark right now,” he said.

The winners of the German French Open in doubles, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, however, lost their final in Cologne. They lost to Raven Klaasen (South Africa) and Ben McLachlan (Japan) 2: 6, 4: 6. Above all, Cologne Mies was upset at the lost success. “The disappointment is there, I would have liked to have held the boat here. But our chances were very bad,” said Mies.
