Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, has surprisingly resigned as finance minister. He announced it on the social media platform Instagram.

At first, there was speculation as to whether Albayrak’s account might have been hacked. But the Treasury Department spokesman confirmed that ARD-Studio Istanbulthat Erdogan’s son-in-law has resigned. On Instagram, Albayrak gave health reasons, but did not give more details. More recently, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and a spokesman for President Erdogan tested positive for the corona virus.

Critical moment Albayrak

It is unclear whether Erdogan will accept Albayrak’s resignation. Albayrak was finance minister for two good years, but he was always criticized. The Turkish lira lost about 30 percent of its value against the dollar this year alone. In the last few days you have won more than ten lire for one euro. Albayrak had stated that there were no plans to intervene in the collapse of the currency.

Experts see the reasons, among other things, in Turkey’s economic problems, in the dispute with France and in the US elections. Newly elected US President Joe Biden no longer wants to protect Turkey from sanctions related to a Russian missile defense system.

It was only on Saturday that Erdogan exchanged the head of the Turkish central bank.
