The ammunition cleaning service of the Hamburg fire brigade defused a fault in the Rothenburgsort district on Wednesday night. The 250 kilogram aerial bomb from World War II was discovered in the afternoon during excavation work at a construction site on Mühlenhagen Street. According to the fire brigade, it was an English explosive bomb with a long-lasting chemical detonator.
Disable delayed
The munitions disposal service established a restricted radius of 300 meters and a warning radius of 500 meters. Neighboring industrial and commercial operations were evacuated. Deactivation was delayed because people were still in the exclusion zone. It didn’t start until 7:35 pm with the help of a special high pressure water shut-off system. An hour later, the ammunition disposal service gave the go-ahead. All blocks can be lifted. The fire brigade was on the scene with a total of 48 emergency services.
