In Bentheim County, police recorded about 40 violations of the new curfew on Boxing Day. It was 22 on Christmas Eve.

Police said Saturday that those affected had been understanding. However, they should expect a fine of at least 150 euros. The curfew was imposed to curb the high number of coronavirus infections in the region.

Leave home just for a good reason

Since December 23, the approximately 140,000 residents of Grafschaft Bentheim have only been allowed to leave their homes and properties between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for professional or medically necessary reasons. It is also allowed for a person to take a dog for a walk. On Christmas Eve, the curfew didn’t start until 10 p.m.

Christmas Eve: Home Too Late

In general, the restriction had a high acceptance among the population, according to the police. The few cases from the first night would have proved it. The district curfew has been in effect since Wednesday night. Six walkers and cyclists were banned from the streets from Wednesday to Thursday. On Christmas Eve, most of those affected simply left too late on their way home after visiting relatives, according to a police spokesman on Friday.

Objective: people should reduce contacts

By restricting exit, the district wants people to reduce their contacts. Experience in other cities and countries has shown that the number of infections could be reduced by it says on the district’s home page. There is no way around stricter measures with an incidence value of more than 200, said district administrator Uwe Fietzek (non-party). In the district, the value on Wednesday was 216.5 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week.
