After the fire in Moria: Seehofer, the CSU and a change of course

At first, Interior Minister Seehofer expressed his doubts after the fire in Moria, then praised himself for the decision to take in more refugees. The rethinking was also due to pressure from within.

After the fire in the Greek refugee camp of Moria last week, the head of the CSU, Markus Söder, waited and then set the address. Shortly after his opponent from the CDU, Armin Laschet, also made it clear on Twitter: “If the federal government decides to accept the people, of course, Bavaria will participate.”

Party mates increase the pressure

That same evening, Federal Development Minister Gerd Müller, also CSU, added: “Personally, I am of the opinion that we should now accept offers from German states and municipalities” and that Germany should go ahead “with a sign of humanity. “. The Federal Republic could host 2,000 refugees.

Müller saw the fields of misery of this world and wanted to act accordingly.

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer was apparently not satisfied:

“It is part of my political life that from time to time my own party friends treat me with special affection.”

Dive first

Pressure from the CSU to host more refugees: obviously this is a new experience for Seehofer. The 71-year-old, who is said to be increasingly withdrawing from his own party, went into hiding for three days. He was working on a solution in his ministry, he said. In hindsight, he puts it this way:

“And that is why a study is not important to me, but in the workbench (…) to obtain the information, to obtain the facts. The Foreign Ministry does it excellently too. And then we have to take a political decision”.

The political decision was made by Seehofer and Chancellor Angela Merkel. Who had to convince who remains open.

A spokeswoman for the federal government does not want to clarify: “So we basically do not give information about the internal unification processes.”

Self-praise for the “human response”

Seehofer, who spoke of a “surrender of the rule of law” and a “rule of injustice” in the refugee policy of 2015, now praises himself for his political decisions after the fire in Moria:

“In front of you is a Federal Minister of the Interior who, more than anyone, has decided to limit and control migrants, supported by Parliament. And so far I am the only Minister of the Interior in Europe who has proposed a solution for the human response “.

Change of course compared to 2015

Bavaria had to take over much of the refugee reception in 2015. The course helped the CSU to copy the AfD and fool the Chancellor, but no. Now it should work better with “humanity and order” and political-party unity. Even the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Söder, manages to praise: “Horst Seehofer succeeds in the attitude that is appropriate for a federal minister of the interior. Above all, he warns about the dimensions of the whole issue.”

It doesn’t matter how you rate the admission of just under 1,500 refugees in need of protection. The CSU does not want to make it a major controversial issue, knowing full well that there are voters, especially in Bavaria, for whom the C still has a meaning.
