Hundreds of arrests and water cannons in Berlin: Federal Justice Minister Lambrecht defended police intervention in crown protests. Other federal politicians have made similar statements.
Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht defended the police raid with water cannons against protesters who protested state coronation measures in Berlin on Wednesday. The SPD politician said that if requirements such as masks or keeping one’s distance were deliberately ignored, a meeting would have to be broken up.
“The state has to show who has a monopoly on violence in this country. It cannot be that the state gives up when many protesters come to deliberately violate the rules,” Lambrecht told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer also defended the actions of the police. “The democratic constitutional state lives and the police are its protective shield,” he said.
Ten officers wounded
