After cup sensation: RWE fans burn Pyro in stadium

Rot-Weiss Essen fans celebrated the victory against archrival Fortuna Düsseldorf with Bengalos. They set them on fire not far from the stadium.

“Crown yourself, crown the year, make the next round clear”, the message from fans of Red and white food for the team it was clear. And the players of the regional leaders of the soccer league fulfilled their wishes and the fans that could not be in the stadium and defeated the second division Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-2.

The cheers on the broken grass were huge, just like outside the stadium. Shortly after the final whistle, the horns of the Hafenstrasse cars were heard directly in the stadium. Emergency lights and fireworks were illuminated, some fans (with distance and masks) marched towards the stadium on foot. “RWE is back,” they chanted in front of the stadium. The team came into view at least and was cheered on by the crowd, but the distance and mask rules were barely observed.

It was the perfect end to the year for Rot-Weiss Essen: RWE spent the winter undefeated at the top of the regional league and can have high hopes of finally moving up to the third division. Christian Neidhart’s team expelled Arminia Bielefeld and now Fortuna Düsseldorf from the DFB Cup for the first time; fans had apparently planned for this hit to also hit shortly before Christmas in view of the holidays.

The next round of the cup will be drawn in early January, and RWE will be the last fourth division to be in the competition and can look forward to another standout game.
