About a month after his admission to the Berlin Charité, the poisoned Putin critic Alexej Navalny is allowed to leave the hospital. According to his doctors, his health has stabilized.
Russian opposition activist Alexej Navalny was released from the Berlin Charité after being treated for his poisoning. This was announced by the doctors responsible for the hospital. The 44-year-old man’s health had “improved so much that acute medical treatment could end” when he was discharged Tuesday, the university hospital announced.
Therefore, the treating physicians consider a full recovery possible “based on the past course and present condition” of Navalny. However, the long-term consequences could only be assessed later, the Charité explained.
No whereabouts information
The Charité did not provide any information on Nawalny’s current whereabouts. “Public communication on the state of health of Mr. Navalny is made in agreement with him and his wife,” he said.
Navalny had posted multiple photos on Instagram in recent days documenting her recovery. She thanked the “brilliant doctors” at the clinic in a message posted Saturday. Until recently, he hadn’t even recognized people and didn’t know how to speak. “That drove me to despair, because I basically already understood what the doctor wanted, but I didn’t know where to get the words from,” Navalny wrote.
More than three weeks in intensive care
Navalny was treated in the clinic for a total of 32 days, including 24 days in the intensive care unit. The well-known critic of the Kremlin was admitted to the Charité on August 22, after collapsing two days earlier during a flight in Russia.
According to the federal government, Navalny was “undoubtedly” poisoned with a chemical nerve agent from the so-called Novitschok group. Moscow rejects the suspicion that Russian government agencies may have deliberately poisoned Navalny.
