Additional Contribution Increases Starting January 2021

For those with mandatory health insurance, the new year will be more expensive. Because health insurance is short on money, the additional contribution is now increasing for many. But there is also a cash register that lowers it.

The first legal health insurance companies are currently announcing the amount of their individual additional contributions for the coming year. At least 17 health insurers will increase their additional contributions on January 1, 2021, as the comparison portal Check24 announced on Friday.

Around 29 million people with compulsory health insurance are already affected. Another 33 health insurance funds have kept their additional contribution constant over the next year, and one health insurance fund is reducing their additional contribution for the new year: BKK Herkules (1.7%; 2020: 2.2%).

Additional contribution: further increases are likely to follow

Check24 expects more upward adjustments in the coming days. “Legal health insurance companies are facing a huge funding gap of 16 billion euros next year,” said Christine Prauschke of Check24.

Each Health insurance determine your additional individual contribution yourself. On average, mandatory health insurance required an additional 1.10 percent contribution in the current year, as calculated by Check24. Half of the contribution is paid by the employee and the other half by the employer.

These health insurances increase the additional contribution (status: December 18, 2020):

Changing health insurance providers will be easier starting in 2021

Starting next year, it will be easier to change the mandatory health insurance: health insurance members no longer have to cancel their previous insurance and request a confirmation of termination, but can purchase new health insurance directly. The new health insurance company will take over the transmission of the termination from January 2021.

There is no risk of insurance gap. The rejection of the application, for example due to age, previous illnesses or ongoing treatments, is excluded according to Check24 for previously legally insured persons. In addition, a shorter validity period will apply from 2021; Consumers can change their legal health insurance every twelve months. Until now, they have been linked to a health insurance company for 18 months.
