Dieter Laser was born in Kiel in 1942, grew up in Hamburg after World War II. There he began his acting training after being separated from his family, which belonged to a Christian sect. He broke it, but he was still able to establish himself in the industry. In the 1970s he was on various theater stages in Berlin and also played at the Burgtheater in Vienna. His film career also began almost simultaneously.

The deceased was among others with stars like Bruno Ganz, Burt Lancaster, John Malkovich and Glenn Close in front of the camera. In 1975 he was awarded the German Film Award for Best Actor for the leading role in his first film “John Glückstadt”. He repeatedly took on episode roles in various German television series and movies. For example, in “Tatort”, “Polizeiruf 110” or “Der Clown”.
