Macron fights for control
France is back in the blockade
So far, only a few regions of France are blocked. But that is no longer enough. In a television address, President Macron announced that the restrictions would be extended to the entire country and would last for at least four weeks.
French President Emmanuel Macron is sending the country back into a far-reaching blockade. The change takes effect on Saturday and is valid for at least one month. So far, the regulations have only applied in the Paris metropolitan area and a few other regions. “We will lose control if we do nothing now,” he said in a televised speech. This means that national exit restrictions apply again. Stores have to close.
In addition, schools across the country will be closed for three weeks, the president said. Distance classes nationwide will run for one week, followed by two weeks of Spring Break. It is the first time in the current school year that schools in France are closed due to Corona.
In France, it had been speculated for some time that Macron would turn to his compatriots again due to the tense situation. More recently, Prime Minister Jean Castex had announced new restrictions on several occasions. So far, schools in France have only been closed during the first strict closure last spring. After that, Macron insisted on keeping this open as long as possible.
The situation of the crown in France has again deteriorated significantly. Hospitals in the Paris metropolitan area, in particular, raised the alarm because intensive care units were overcrowded. The number of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week was recently 375 nationwide. Last week, Germany classified France as a high-incidence area and tightened entry regulations. In the country of around 67 million people, more than 95,000 people have died so far. Currently, four percent of the population is fully vaccinated and just under eight percent have received at least one dose so far.
