In terms of turnover, FC Bayern is number three in Europe

According to a study, FC Bayern Munich is ranked third among the best-selling football clubs in Europe. The record champions only have to admit defeat to two Spanish clubs in the ranking. In addition to Bayern, three other Bundesliga clubs have qualified in the top 20.

The corona pandemic has left its mark on the financially strongest football clubs. According to calculations by the audit and consulting firm Deloitte, the top 20 clubs with the highest turnover achieved total revenues of € 8.2 billion in the 2019/20 season. That was twelve per cent less than in the previous season, when a record 9.3 billion euros was reached.

That comes from Deloitte’s “Football Money League” report. The main reasons given for the decline were lower media revenue (minus 23 percent) and the large loss of game day revenue (minus 17 percent).

On the money list, four Bundesliga clubs are in the top 20 for the first time in seven years. FC Bayern, the record champions of Germany, went from fourth to third place behind FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, champions of Spain. Borussia Dortmund remained in twelfth place, Schalke 04 went from 15th to 16th place. Eintracht Frankfurt is at the forefront for the first time. The Hessians moved up seven places to 20th.

Bundesliga clubs had to accept a drop in revenue as well, but this was moderate compared to other clubs. For example, the Munich Champions League winner had raised 660.1 million euros like Germany’s Croesus 2018/19, last season sales fell by four percent to 634.1 million euros.

For comparison: FC Barcelona remained at the top with 715.1 million euros, but the decrease of 125.7 million euros (2018/19 sales: 840.8 million euros) was the second biggest drop with a decrease of almost 15 percent among the top 20 clubs.
