Despite the harsh winter, the number of refugees arriving in Europe via the Balkan route has increased. The video recordings show the images of the place and the heartbreaking experiences of the people.

The number of refugees arriving in Italy via the Balkan route has increased again in recent months. In the first eleven months of 2020, according to official data from the Italian Interior Ministry, the Italian authorities rejected 1,240 people in the border area with Slovenia. In the same period last year there were only 203. According to support groups on the French border, the number of refugees and migrants there has also increased significantly since June. In recent months, families have been increasingly stranded.

In the snow and freezing cold, people try to cross the mountains into France or Austria. Many report rejections, the so-called “rejections”, by the French or Italian police, while others report ill-treatment or harassment. Many refugees are struggling with cold temperatures and harsh conditions in transit areas. Doctors Without Borders warns of a desperate situation.

As part of a cooperation with the aid organization Doctors without Borders, t-online shows the dramatic images on the roads and in transit areas. You can also see the impressive reports of people, where they come from and what routes they are taking, in the video above. You can also find the publication here.
