Hamburg – Corona alarm at Airbus in Hamburg-Finkenwerder!

At the aircraft manufacturer (14,000 employees in Hamburg), 21 employees tested positive for the corona virus. The health authority confirmed this at the request of BILD. The authority has been aware of the case since Friday.

500 people are now in quarantine, because: The infected people worked in different corridors of the factory and were separated spatially (the corridors are next to each other) and for protection reasons. However, according to information from BILD, it cannot be ruled out that there have been contacts, for example, in break rooms. It is also unclear how far the virus has spread.

The authority confirms: All those affected have been declared first-degree contact persons.

In response to a request from BILD, a company spokesperson said “serial testing and quarantine had started immediately.” A “large number of potentially affected employees in the relevant production area” were in “voluntary home isolation”.

According to information from BILD, seven of those infected could carry a coronavirus mutation, which is considered highly contagious.

The health authority only confirmed that all tests are currently being examined to detect the virus mutation. Results are expected from the middle of next week.

The aircraft maker has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic: 15,000 of the 130,000 jobs worldwide will be cut. Of the 5,100 jobs affected in Germany, 3,200 are in the north. There are about 2350 jobs in Hamburg. Also, there are 1900 more in providers.

The voluntary measures will run until the end of March, after which layoffs cannot be ruled out.

Production had already closed last year; At the Hamburg location, A320 aircraft in particular were affected. Before the outbreak of the pandemic, 60 machines were completed per month behind Elbdeich, after which production was reduced to 40.

What are the consequences of the corona outbreak and mass quarantine on production at Finkenwerder? The effects on production and relocation to other plants are currently being “examined”, the Airbus spokesman told BILD.
