RKI crown numbers: clear decrease in new infections

The RKI still reports more than 20,000 new infections with the corona virus, but the trend is clearly downward. The 7-day incidence has fallen to its lowest level in more than eleven weeks.

The number of new corona infections in Germany has decreased significantly recently. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave a 7-day incidence at 119.0, the lowest value since November 1. However, in one day there were still 20,398 new infections. In addition, 1013 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours.

The 7-day incidence, that is, the number of new infections reported to health authorities per 100,000 inhabitants per week, had continuously decreased over the past ten days. It had reached its previous high of 197.6 shortly before Christmas. However, the differences between the federal states are large: Thuringia has the highest incidences with 225.0 and Brandenburg with 203.3. Bremen has the lowest value with 76.6.

5,000 new infections less than a week ago

Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 25,164 new infections and 1,244 new deaths, the previous high, in 24 hours. The largest number of new infections was reported on December 18, at 33,777, but this included 3,500 late reports.

Since the start of the pandemic, the RKI has counted a total of 2,088,400 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The total number of people who died from or with Corona increased to 49,783. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 1,762,200.

R value unchanged at 0.87

The seven-day R-value nationwide is unchanged at 0.87. This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 87 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection eight to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Due to the continuing high number of infections, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of government of the federal states extended the current blockade until February 14 and tightened it at the same time.
