On his last day in office, US President Donald Trump made the decision to pardon his former chief strategist Steve Bannon, the White House announced.
Bannon is a co-founder of the Internet platform “Breitbart” and is one of the most influential voices in the ultra-conservative field of American politics. He was arrested in August 2020 on charges of diverting money from an online fundraiser to build a wall in Mexico.
The process should start in May
Bannon pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. He presents himself as a victim of political persecution. Trial in the case should begin in May 2021.
Bannon joined Trump’s team in 2016 and was in charge of the campaign. The 67-year-old is said to have played a major role in Trump’s surprising success at the time.
After the election victory, Bannon became Trump’s top strategist, but had to resign in 2017. Critics accuse Trump of using clemency, particularly for people close to him.
With the current resolution, it granted a total of 143 pardons or reduced sentences. Among them were rap stars and former congressmen.
Loyal companions forgiven
Shortly before Christmas, he had pardoned several loyal colleagues, including his former campaign team boss, Paul Manafort. In July 2020, he had his longtime confidant, Roger Stone, released from prison.
Bannon’s pardon is also noteworthy because the former chief strategist has been indicted but has yet to be convicted. As a rule, American presidents forgive those who have already been convicted.
