The Robert Koch Institute reports 22,368 new corona infections in Germany. This has exceeded the two million mark for infections detected since the start of the pandemic. The seven-day incidence is 146.1.

In Germany, more than two million people have been infected with the virus since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. Health authorities recently reported 22,368 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in 24 hours, as announced by the RKI. The number of known cases since the start of the pandemic amounted to 2,000,958. However, the institute notes that the actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections would not be detected.

For new infections registered within 24 hours, the highest value was reported on December 18, at 33,777, but it contained 3,500 late reports. Basically, the data interpretation is currently a bit difficult because around the turn of the year, according to the RKI, corona cases were discovered, recorded and transmitted late.

New infections increased again

Additionally, the RKI reports 1,133 deaths related to a coronavirus infection in one day. The total number of registered corona deaths in Germany since the start of the pandemic rose to 44,994. On Thursday, the RKI announced a new record with 1,244 deaths per crown. Both people who died directly from the disease and people with previous illnesses who were infected with the coronavirus and for whom the exact cause of death cannot be conclusively proven.

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to health authorities in seven days, the so-called seven-day incidence, was 146.1. Its previous high was reached on December 22 at 197.6. However, the differences between federal states are very large: Thuringia has the highest incidences with 287.6 and Saxony with 274.1. Bremen has the lowest value with 78.7. The goal of the federal government is to reduce the incidence below 50.

Merkel prefers crisis summits

According to the RKI report on Thursday, the national seven-day R-value was 1.02 (previous day: also 1.02). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 102 more people. The value represents the appearance of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Due to the high number of infections, a strict lockdown has been in place across Germany since mid-December, initially limited to January 31. Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to hold the next summit on the crown crisis with state heads of government in the next week to discuss how to proceed. The summit was originally scheduled for January 25.
