Montgomery Killer Executed
After days of legal tug of war, now it has happened: For the first time since the 1950s, a federal death sentence is being carried out against a woman in the United States. Lisa Montgomery’s lawyers had previously sent a pardon to President Trump. The head of state ignored him.
In the United States, for the first time in almost 70 years, a woman has been executed by federal justice. The death sentence against Lisa Montgomery was carried out today at the Terre Haute Correctional Center in the state of Indiana, the United States Department of Justice said. The Supreme Court had recently cleared the way for execution.
The 52-year-old man was sentenced to death for the gruesome murder of a pregnant woman. An Indiana state court suspended execution of the sentence on Monday due to doubts about Montgomery’s mood. However, an appeals court reversed the decision a day later. The Washington Supreme Court finally agreed with the authorities.
It was the first federal execution of a woman since 1953. Montgomery strangled a very pregnant woman in 2004 and then cut the baby from her womb. The day after the crime, she was arrested at her home in Skidmore, Missouri, about 150 miles from the scene. She had the kidnapped baby who survived the gruesome act with her. Before confessing, she told the police and her husband that she gave birth to the girl herself.
Montgomery was sentenced to death in 2007. The US Department of Justice ruled in his case, as well as in 12 other death row inmates in federal jails, that the executions should take place last year. Previously, executions by the federal courts had been suspended for 17 years. Outgoing US President Donald Trump is an advocate for the death penalty. He ignored the forgiveness of Montgomery’s attorneys.
