As expected, the number of corona cases on Sunday is again slightly lower. In the east, the incidence remains at a high level. The R value is cause for concern.
German health authorities reported 16,946 new corona infections in one day on Sunday. In addition, 465 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours, as announced in the morning by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The number of cases registered is usually lower on Sundays, in part because fewer tests are conducted on weekends. Basically, the interpretation of the data is currently difficult because around Christmas and the turn of the year, according to the RKI, corona cases were discovered, recorded and transmitted late.
The number of new infections reported to health authorities in seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence in seven days) was 162.2 on Sunday morning. Its previous high was reached on December 22 at 197.6. However, the differences between federal states are huge: Saxony had the highest incidences with 269.8 and Thuringia with 232.4. Bremen had the lowest value with 74.0. Due to the holidays, the weekly values should also be evaluated with caution.
R-value too high again
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted 1,908,527 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany (as of January 10 at 12 am). The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 40,343. The RKI stated that the number of people recovered was around 1,525,300.
According to the RKI report on Sunday, the national seven-day R-value was 1.16 (Saturday: 1.17). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 116 more people. The value represents the onset of infection 8-16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection rate decreases. However, the RKI emphasizes in its report that around the turn of the year corona cases are only discovered, recorded and transmitted late, “so the R-value may be underestimated.”
