With a significant increase in performance in the second half, Bayern Munich simply avoided a false start to the new year. After a 2-0 break, Bayern turned the game around against Mainz 05 and in the end they deservedly won 5-2.

For Mainz, the resumption after the separation of coach Jan-Moritz Lichte and sporting director Rouwen Schröder failed despite a good performance. Interim manager Jan Siewert, who only managed the team in this game, will be replaced on Tuesday by the new head coach, later to be called Bo Svensson.

After a few minutes, Mainz’s Jonathan Burkardt had the advantage on his feet, but then the young forward missed due to a reflection from Manuel Neuers. Bayern, who competed with Leroy Sané in place of the ailing Kingsley Coman, then took the initiative, but were always susceptible to counterattacks from guests. Burkardt used one of them to make it 1-0 when he beat Jérôme Boateng and took a bold shot. The Bayern defender claimed a foul against himself, but the blow counted. It was the eighth time in a row that Bayern fell 1-0, they did not lose any of these games.

Shortly before the move, it got more difficult for Bayern. Alexander Hack capped off a Mainz free kick to make it 2-0, Neuer again had no chance. On the other hand, the young Mainz goalkeeper, Finn Dahmen, intervened several times in his league debut. However: Bayern were too harmless on offense and an unstable defense despite the return of Joshua Kimmch. With 0: 2 he went to rest.

After the play, Bayern naturally increased the pressure and quickly reached the connecting goal: Joshua Kimmich headed a beautiful combination that he himself had started to make it 1: 2. Kimmich also participated in the tie when he handed the ball to Leroy Sané. The forward then began a remarkable solo career, which ended with a long-range shot to make it 2-2.

The Mainz side were not put off by this, however Quaison hit the crossbar shortly after Sané’s goal, which would almost have been the renewed lead. Immediately after the change, Latza narrowly missed Mainz’s third goal with a shot to the post.

But now Bayern did not give in: first, an own goal by Barreiro from Mainz was revoked for being offside by a Bayern player, shortly after the Munich team also scored according to the rules: Niklas Süle scored third Munich goal (70th minute) as a result of a corner kick Mainz was later defeated. The previously low-key Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty in the 76th minute for the fourth goal and the final decision. In the 83rd minute, the Pole again took a step forward with his 19th goal of the season.
