One story, two movies!

On Sunday night, ARD dares to experiment with “Feinde” by following Ferdinand von Schirach. Either follow the investigator in “Against time” in the first one or look at the criminal case from the defense attorney’s point of view in “The confession” in all the third programs. What’s special about this: then the other movie is shown.

In the part that deals with the kidnapping of children, a figure plays the central role in one way or another: the acting legend Klaus Maria Brandauer (77).

BILD am SUNDAY: What are your thoughts on the past year?

Klaus Maria Brandauer: “I’m actually pretty good. Although I know that this pandemic is very, very difficult to deal with and that it will take longer than we all might initially believe. And it is not a consolation that the whole world is sick with Corona. Although, perhaps a little, because fate treats everyone the same. “

How did you surrender to this destination?

Brandauer: “With all my need for freedom, I have found that I can also be a very good guy. In fact, I am doing what the government and virologists say. In the meantime, however, I have had the experience that I trust those who give the most recommendations, but at the same time admit that they are not entirely sure either. “

The crisis hits its industry, theater and cinema with special force. What is the actor without applause?

Brandauer: “If the stage actor doesn’t get applause, he just goes to see the movie, that’s always been the case. (Laughs) No, seriously: at the Burgtheater, there is a virtual rehearsal of when and if the productions will come, nobody knows. Works? I do not know. An actor who cannot act is not an actor. “

So neither do you?

Brandauer: “I have maintained quite well over time, we are talking about almost a year. The forced breakup also had many good consequences for me: I walk a lot. And I started reading again, reviewing books that I already knew. Despite the circumstances, it was a glorious summer in the country and the fall was also pleasant. Now we are back in Vienna and we look further afield. What I can now see particularly clearly: we are all in the same boat. “

But there are many who do not seem to like this boat.

Brandauer: “Yes, there are, but I don’t understand those who don’t want to obey the rules. We will not go through this difficult time if everyone does only what they think is right. Protecting yourself and others should go without saying. So, I feel restricted, but not sponsored. I’m not going to the barricades yet. “

Are you still happy that you are not at the beginning of your career and now you have to fight to survive?

Brandauer: “It’s pure coincidence, I can’t help it. But the situation is dire for many young colleagues who have yet to build something. I have the impression that you have to be very strong to get help. What’s even worse is that people say, “Well, the theater, then we locked it …” I think the actors overestimated each other, including me. When the baker closes in the corner, there is a revolution. But if we don’t act, then what? “

Yes, what then?

Brandauer: “Nothing! The theater, the art itself, is a very important engine for our life. I don’t want to think about what our life would be like if the theater no longer existed. The theater helps us to discuss things, discuss the great things. issues, but in a very peaceful way. Ultimately, we only experience this possibility through art. “

Is Corona the earth’s revenge against people for treating them badly?

Brandauer: „In fact, I’m very open to such scenarios, but I don’t think so at the moment. We are not punished yet, but that can still come. Anyone who thinks that Corona is the revenge of the Earth against the people should make an effort from now on and become a better person. “

With regard to his two films “Ferdinand von Schirach: Feinde” the question arises: does the end always justify the means?

Brandauer: “You are alluding to the fact that the policeman in our film tortures the suspect. I hope Germany will discuss the term ‘rescue torture’! The ends in no way justify the means. Unless the end is good, and so are the means. “

Who decides what is right and what is wrong?

Brandauer: “Everyone. I am very happy that we live in a democracy. And I am convinced that we have to do something to keep it that way. We have to look, take care, so that we can continue to be exemplary. I want to read something in black and white, I want to see it monitored the possibilities of our democracy. I have nothing against the expression ‘justice’, but sometimes it is too vague for me. “

What do you think is unfair?

Brandauer: “Many things are unfair, but in general I can’t do much with this term either. If my piece of cake is smaller than yours, it’s definitely unfair. But beyond that, it stops me from evaluating injustice. “

If tomatoes are thrown at you after a premiere, it’s clearly unfair.

Brandauer: “No way. How? I don’t think it’s funny when tomatoes are flying after me, but I can’t decide if that’s fair or unfair. So I’m happy that tomatoes are thrown at me. I can’t do anything about it.”

Torture to save a life: the case of Jakob von Metzler

A look back shows how much a movie can represent reality.

In the accompanying documentary, the filmmakers recall the real case of Jakob von Metzler († 11).

The son of the Frankfurt banker was kidnapped in the fall of 2002 by student Magnus Gäfgen. Although he confessed to the kidnapping, he did not reveal the hiding place.

Then-investigator Wolfgang Daschner threatened violence and was later found guilty in court. He could no longer help Jakob von Metzler: Gäfgen had suffocated him.
