Dave Chisnall took Michael van Gerwen out of the 2021 Darts World Cup at an incredible level (The 2021 Darts World Cup LIVE on TV on SPORT1 and LIVESTREAM).

Veteran Dominator lost the PDC World Championship quarterfinal to “Chizzy” with 0: 5! For the Englishman, who played an average of 107.4, it was the first victory in his history against “Mighty Mike”, after 27 failed attempts according to the PDC. (All game stats)

The world number one also only lost one World Cup match to zero for the second time in his career. For the 31-year-old, it’s probably the low point of a difficult year. In the Darts Grand Slam he failed in the quarterfinals, in the World Matchplay and in the European Championship, he lost in the second round. In September, he also missed a playoff entry in the Premier League for the first time in his career.

If Gerwyn Price, who won a thriller against Daryl Gurney, wins the tournament, van Gerwen will even lose his place at the top.

Van Gerwen “devastated”

“I’m totally devastated. I never got going tonight and was disappointed,” he wrote on Twitter, congratulating his opponent: “Big credit to Dave Chisnall who was outstanding throughout the game.” Van Gerwen, three times world champion, last triumphed two years ago at Alexandra Palace in London.

Chisnall, using his first phosphor dart, said in SPORT1: “Michael didn’t play his best darts and I made the most of it. I’m very happy. It was a great victory, perhaps the biggest one yet.” Gary Anderson now awaits the 40-year-old in his first World Cup semi-final.

The last remaining former world champion on the field had won in the afternoon by 5: 1 against the Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode. The “Flying Scotsman” Anderson wins his third world title this weekend. In the second game Stephen Bunting and Price face each other (Darts World Cup results and schedule).

Chisnall gets frantic

Van Gerwen grabbed the first leg, but then “Chizzy” went into a frenzy. He won the first set 3-1, played an average of 112.1 (Van Gerwen: 108.31) and then got two more legs.

Several double errors and the resulting dart boards led van Gerwen to 2: 2 after the legs. Never mind, Chisnall thought, and kept a cool head on the Decider: Van Gerwen faced a 2-0 deficit in the set. “My scoring power was not there,” he analyzed.

Crazy leg in the fourth set

In the third set, Chisnall shattered MvG’s break hopes with a 114 checkout and quickly made it 2-0. A monstrous finish of 150 gave van Gerwen hope, and another victory followed. But again Chisnall had better nerves in the fifth stage and made it 3-0 against number 1, amazing!

The fourth set was crowned by one of the best stages in the history of the World Cup. Chisnall threw eight perfect darts and checked with the eleventh throw, van Gerwen also did not help with five perfect darts and a 141.

And in the fifth round, too, Chisnall couldn’t be stopped and gave his opponent a shutout. “Mighty Mike” missed out at 112 while Chisnall stayed at 80 remaining.

Chisnall makes liming perfect

And “Chizzy” couldn’t be asked twice, to hit the simple 20 twice, before the historic takedown with a shot on top was perfect – insane!

“It was the best match he ever played. He played well and I didn’t. I can only blame myself,” said van Gerwen: “I’m bitterly disappointed.”

An average of 98.29 was too little for van Gerwen, the Dutchman managed just four 180s, while Chisnall hit 14 on the board and scored a total of 26 times more than 100 points. The eighth-place exit rate in the world rankings was 48.39 percent, while MvG came in at 43.75 percent.

“I’ve been under the radar for the past few years, but I want this world title and I know I play well enough to win it,” Chisnall announced.
