Unterharles (dpa) – According to previous investigations, a father killed his five-year-old son in southern Thuringia and then took his own life. The lifeless bodies of those missing for several days were found by a hiker on Thursday in a forest near the Meiniger district of Unterharles (Schmalkalden-Meiningen district), police said. According to Friday, the Meiningen prosecutor’s office is assuming a “prolonged suicide” by the 44-year-old according to the current situation.

However, for an accurate evaluation of the case, the results of the ordered autopsy of the corpses should be awaited. After the body was found, the police had already declared that the situation had “been a violent crime that killed the child.” The father took his own life after the crime. The investigators did not provide information on the possible reasons for the event.

The 44-year-old man from Bauerbach (Grabfeld municipality) and his son had been missing since December 19, according to police. Father and son left by car at noon. On December 30, the police also asked the public for help in finding them. The hiker also discovered the described wagon in the woods. The location is a few kilometers from the man’s place of residence and is on the border with Bavaria.
