Unusual change of the year
Germany says goodbye to the year of terror 2020

The new year started relatively quiet in Germany. The big New Years Eve parties were canceled due to closure and 2021 was greeted in a small circle. In Berlin, the police and fire brigade are still on a grand scale.

The new year has begun. Across Germany, people celebrated the New Year in small groups and mostly in silence and welcomed the year 2021 at midnight.

The biggest New Year’s Eve parties were taboo in the republic this year. At the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin there was a huge void despite the staging. The ZDF only transmits a program without an audience. Jürgen Drews and Vicky Leandros appeared at the New Year’s Eve digital party “Welcome Berlin 2021”.

In Germany, for the second time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, there is a hard lockdown. Restaurants and bars have been closed since the beginning of November, as have museums, theaters, and leisure facilities. The stores have also been largely closed since mid-December. On this occasion there was a general ban on the sale of fireworks in the last days of the year that is coming to an end. The main goal was to relieve the hospitals of additional patients.

In Berlin, the police are trying to enforce the ban on fireworks that is applied in many places with a large contingent. It is in action at night with around 2,900 workers. Firecrackers and rocket fire could be heard repeatedly in many streets at night. Compared to previous years, the noise level was initially limited.

The Berlin fire brigade meets on the usual “New Year’s Eve”, as the helpers call it, from 7:00 pm. According to a spokesperson, there have been no special incidents so far. The German fire brigade union had warned against violence against emergency services in light of current restrictions on alcohol and a ban on firecrackers. Also in recent years there have been repeated attacks on New Year’s Eve.
