New Year’s Eve started quieter than in previous years in Berlin. The fire brigade is in the usual “state of emergency at the end of the year”, as the helpers say, from 7:00 p.m.

According to a spokesperson, there have been no special incidents so far. Police, who are deployed with about 2,900 people, made a similar statement. On the streets of Wedding, Kreuzberg and Neukölln, firecrackers and rocket fire could be heard over and over again at night. Compared to previous years, the noise level was initially limited.

At Märkisches Viertel, in Gropiusstadt and at Hermannplatz, the police had to intervene because groups had gathered there. “Lighting pyrotechnics, firing alarm weapons, consuming alcohol, those of our university. Recorded personal data fills various advertisements, ”police said on Twitter.

At the Brandenburg Gate, where hundreds of thousands of people celebrate New Year’s Eve, it initially remained practically empty. The high-rise fireworks that usually light there had been canceled. ZDF will broadcast its New Year’s Eve show live from there, where musicians such as Jürgen Drews or the band Karat were also supposed to perform, but without an audience.

This year the sale of fireworks was not allowed. The Berlin Senate also established 56 no-go zones in which the burning of firecrackers and rockets is forbidden. The sale of alcohol in retail stores was also banned from the early afternoon. With the measures, the Senate wants to ensure that fewer injured people have to be treated in emergency rooms, which are already occupied, and that there are no large crowds in the pandemic.
