Monkey house fire on New Year’s Eve in Krefeld: criminal proceedings ended

Exactly one year ago, the monkey house at the Krefeld Zoo caught fire, dozens of animals died. Three women are said to have raised lanterns from the sky during the night, one of which set the building on fire. The criminal process on the case has already ended because the three suspects have accepted their sentence.

“My client accepted the fine of 3,600 euros,” said defense attorney Oliver Allesch. He sent the necessary letter to the Krefeld district court. Instead of the original 9,000 euros, 180 daily rates of 20 euros were set.

It was the most rational way to accept that, Allesch said. Your client could live with that and start the new year now. The newspaper “Bild” had previously reported on the end of the process.

The monkey house was completely destroyed in the fire on New Year’s Eve. About 50 animals died, including eight great apes. A seriously injured gorilla had to be shot by a police officer. Later, the building was demolished.
