Corona requirements tighten in Mallorca

The number of new corona infections is increasing rapidly in the Balearic Islands. Now the measures in Mallorca are being tightened again. The risk of infection on the island is “extremely high,” says Prime Minister Armengol.

Due to the almost incessant corona number for weeks, measures to contain the pandemic in Mallorca are tightening again. Among other things, restaurants, cafes and pubs on the Spanish holiday island will have to close at 6pm on Tuesday, four hours earlier than before. The president of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, announced this Sunday in Palma. The new restrictions will be published in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands before Monday night and will apply for two weeks, until January 11.

The Balearic Islands have been the region with the highest Crown figures in all of Spain since the middle of the month. The situation in Mallorca is particularly bad. There, the number of infections per 100,000 residents rose to 607 in two weeks on Sunday. A week ago this value was below 400. For comparison: according to the EU authority ECDC, this so-called 14-day incidence was the last 249 in all of Spain, in Germany just under 394.

“Extremely high” risk

Corona risk is “extremely high” on the island, Armengol warned. The number of Covid patients in the intensive care unit increased by 35 percent to 69 in one week. Therefore, we must “prevent negligence and crowds as much as possible,” said the socialist politician.

The measures only tightened in Mallorca on December 14. As of Tuesday, the closing time will be brought forward from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Grocery stores and stores for basic necessities, such as gas stations, are excluded. There are also more stringent requirements for shopping malls and large stores with more than 700 square meters of retail space. They have to close on weekends and holidays. The nightly curfew will be maintained from 10 pm, but contrary to expectations it will not be relaxed on New Years Eve.

The measures currently in force in the neighboring islands of Ibiza and Menorca will be maintained. Only in Formentera, the smallest of the four large Balearic Islands, where infections are also increasing, will there be somewhat stricter restrictions from Tuesday.
