A lonely old man calls the police on Christmas Eve
Poignant gesture in Italy: because he feels lonely at Christmas, a pensioner near Bologna dials the emergency number. He lacks a person to toast Christmas, says the oldest. Officials comply with the request and pay the 94-year-old a visit a little later.
He felt lonely and wanted to toast someone at Christmas: a 94-year-old man dialed the emergency number in Alto Reno Terme, not far from the Italian city of Bologna, because he felt lonely. “I’m not missing anything, I just need one person to celebrate Christmas with,” said the retiree when he called the Carabinieri Police on Thursday.
“If I had an officer who could come see me for ten minutes,” he asked. His children are away and he feels depressed. In fact, the Carabinieri came to see him a little later. All three toasted the man at Christmas, as a photo shows. According to the Carabinieri, he shared anecdotes about his experiences during World War II and made a video call with the officers to his relatives.
Due to the corona pandemic, strict travel and departure restrictions apply in Italy during Christmas and New Years until the beginning of January. Before the holidays, Pope Francis had reminded everyone to think of the sick and lonely at Christmas. One phone call is enough.
