The US electoral body has officially confirmed Trump’s clear defeat in the presidential elections. But the Republican does not tire of attacking the electoral result on all channels. Your team is now making another attempt.
TThe current president of the United States, Donald Trump, continues with the legal battle against his defeat in the presidential elections. Trump’s campaign team announced Sunday that it had filed a motion with the Supreme Court to review and overturn the decisions of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court.
Trump’s camp claims the court violated constitutional rights through several vote-by-mail decisions. As a result, invalid votes were tallied in the state. This Pennsylvania objection is unlikely to be promising; anyway, the Trump camp cannot shake the overall election result.
The Republican had lost the presidential election in early November by a clear margin to Democrat Joe Biden. So far, Trump has not admitted defeat in the election, but stubbornly claims that he was deprived of victory through massive fraud. Neither Trump nor his lawyers or supporters provided any substantial evidence to back up these claims. So far, more than 50 lawsuits from the Trump camp have been rejected, two of them before the Supreme Court.
Just two weeks ago, the Supreme Court rejected an injunction request with which Trump and his supporters wanted to reverse the outcome of the Pennsylvania elections in favor of Trump. Just over a week ago, the Supreme Court also dismissed a lawsuit by the state of Texas against the results of elections in the four states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan. Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, backed by department heads from other states and Republican House of Representatives, filed the lawsuit to overturn Biden’s victory over fellow party Trump.
Following the death of Liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September, Trump had pushed for her to swiftly fill the Supreme Court seat with Conservative attorney Amy Coney Barrett ahead of the Supreme Court elections. He also explicitly referred to a possible dispute over the outcome of the elections. Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes. However, the Trump camp’s previous lawsuits were similarly dismissed by the justices, regardless of whether they were nominated by Democratic or Republican presidents.
Meanwhile, the electorate in the states has officially confirmed Biden’s victory over Trump, with 306 votes to 232. So, the 20 votes of Pennsylvania voters are not decisive. In the lawsuit for the Supreme Court, Trump’s side argues that the issue of the electoral process in the state should be clarified in principle with a view to future elections, also for the 2024 elections, in which Trump has a “constitutional right” to run. .
So far, the Republican has not commented if he wants to run again in four years, but he clings to the myth that he has already won these elections for a second term. Scarcely a day goes by when Trump is not furious on Twitter over the election results and spreading unsubstantiated allegations of fraud. Several US media reported over the weekend that Trump was still busy discussing scenarios for how the election result could still be changed behind the scenes.
The “New York Times” reported Saturday, citing unspecified sources, that there was a sometimes heated meeting of Trump with advisers in the Oval Office on Friday night. There, Trump discussed, among other things, the use of a controversial attorney for his campaign team, Sidney Powell, as a special investigator for the government for alleged election fraud. Powell had recently made headlines with a conspiracy theory that Venezuela’s leadership had manipulated vote-counting software to influence the outcome of the US elections.
The report said that at the meeting in the Oval Office, Trump also asked about the possible use of military forces, an idea pioneered by his former National Security adviser Michael Flynn. The Axios news site wrote that high-ranking officials in the Trump administration were increasingly concerned that the president was engaging in such mind games and surrounding conspiracy theorists.
The final result of the presidential election will be officially announced in Congress in Washington on January 6. Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20. On that day, according to the constitution, Trump’s term ends automatically, even if he does not admit defeat.
