Recent trips to the Holstein stadium in Kiel turned out to be extreme for 1. FC Nürnberg, even by their own standards. In April 2018, after a 3-1 win, manager Michael Köllner announced the promotion three days before the end of the season (rightly so). In June 2020, after a 1: 1 drop to relegation place 16, everyone expected third division relegation (wrongly).

This time it was a pretty normal trip north, if you can speak of normal travel at this point. After three victories in four games, the club simply wanted to show its rising form with the best team in Holstein; only partially succeeded. After a decent performance on defense, the club had to admit defeat to the new leaders after a dream goal from Fin Bartels shortly before the 0: 1 final.

Soso in the fjord: harmless FCN gets nothing in Kiel

That was too little for 1. FC Nürnberg’s offense! When he plays away in Kiel, the club keeps the first half hour open, but then he stops playing football and conceded the decisive goal, albeit artistically. The best scenes in pictures? Can I help you!

Beforehand, Nuremberg coach Robert Klauß wanted and had to change his starting eleven again. Wanted, because Fabian Nürnberger and Fabian Schleusner replaced Nikola Dovedan and Hanno Behrens on the offensive flanks for sporting reasons. I have to do it because Enrico Valentini missed with a hamstring. Instead, Noel Knothe defended on the right.

In the new formation, the club initially looked very good. The guests controlled the action for a long time in the first round and hopefully they could have rewarded early for this control, the one with a bit more of an overview of referee Thorben Siewer.

No ideas against Kiel: Give the Klauss Club ratings!

The extremely defensive basic orientation of the FCN in Kiel almost puts a meter on the old master’s point count. However, Fin Bartel’s feat artistically thwarted this endeavor. How did you see the performance of the FCN in the fjord? Give your grades to Klauss and his club!

He had discovered a Felix Lohkemper foul on Stefan Thesker within nine minutes. Instead of a good counter-attack situation for the club, there was a free kick for the locals. It was a safe start for the Nuremberg team and they also scored a goal. Fabian Schleusener, however, was offside after a good pass from Johannes Geis (21st).

Mathenia on the spot

The Kiel favorite needed almost half an hour to get chances against a club that was also vigilant defensively. Joshua Mees headed in near the goal in the 26th minute and Christian Mathenia directed a long shot from Jannik Dehm over the crossbar (35th). An intensely played game was tied at halftime.

After the interruption, it was again Kiel who invested the most in total to change something about this situation. Obviously, the club had developed so much joy defending together, which had been a success so far, that it was hardly noticeable in the opposite direction. Nürnberg was down, Kiel combined, and still not getting very close to the first goal of the night for a long time. It was rarely really dangerous for Mathenia, on the other hand Schleusener and Lohkemper stumbled in the unfortunate duo, the first against second half chance (66th).

Bartels through the air

The fact that they are far from consolidated on their way back to a decent second division squad became more and more apparent to the Nuremberg squad as the game increased. Still, it took a dream goal to put Kiel in the lead. After a Fabian Reese cross, Fin Bartels was in the air in the 80th minute and in the penalty area, and in this position he carried the ball into the goal, passing the helpless Mathenia.

It was a deserved advantage for the hosts, but at the same time it was an undeserved deficit for Nuremberg. Robert Klauss’s team was unable to respond that night, although the manager wanted to provoke a sort of final offense on a late-shift defensive afternoon.

So sadly, they got on the bus that took them home. And you gained the knowledge that the path to more enjoyable table regions will be extremely exhausting.
