Prisoners instigate a prison riot

At the JVA Untermaßfeld in Thuringia there was a prison riot. 80 officers were on duty to get the situation under control again. Police said there was no danger of an outbreak at any time.

Both in a cell and in the courtyard of the Untermaßfeld prison, Thuringia, several inmates ignored the guards’ requests. The criminal investigation department is now investigating a riot at the prison.

secondSeveral inmates were injured in an incident at the Untermaßfeld prison in Thuringia. According to their own statements, the police are investigating a riot in the prison. The situation on Tuesday night was brought under control in a very short time. “At no time was there a risk of the prisoners leaving the prison facilities,” police said.

According to initial findings, one inmate is said to have felt that he was not receiving adequate medical treatment and thus initially ignored instructions from staff in the institution yard. “Then it went off,” a spokesman for the Thuringian Justice Ministry said on Wednesday. Later there were also riots in the detention rooms. “The staff are very prudent and very good and have the situation under control,” the spokesman said. The situation in the Untermaßfeld prison is now calm.

In a police announcement on Wednesday night it was said: “Thuringian riot police and other agencies were able to arrest people and take them back to their cells.”

Smoke came out of a cell

According to initial investigations, smoke formed in one cell and two men are said to have suffered smoke inhalation. Another inmate was slightly injured when he was arrested by officers. Pepper spray was also used and two men suffered slight eye irritation. One inmate had circulatory problems and had been examined by a doctor.

Thuringia Justice Minister Dirk Adams (Greens) thanked the emergency services that evening “for their quick and sensible intervention”. According to the Ministry of Justice, the prison has 345 places for male prisoners and is designed for prison terms of up to two and a half years.

Mutiny in prison is classified as a crime in the Penal Code. As a result, this is the case, for example, when prisoners “band together and use combined forces” to coerce or attack prison officials.
