If the power fails on a container ship, there is no fuse you can replace. Then a steel monster weighing more than 22,000 tons becomes a deadly torpedo.

Hamburg / Shanghai – Serious shipwreck Sunday night at 11.30pm off the coast of Shanghai!

▶ ︎ The Hamburg container ship “Oceana” (172 meters, 1700 boxes) crashed into the smaller Chinese freighter “Xin Qi Sheng 69” (650 containers). Soon after, the freighter sank. Three sailors died.

How could that happen?

The “Oceana” is said to have had machine problems shortly after leaving Shanghai (on the way to Chittagong).

The 16 crew members tried to save themselves by jumping into the water. Three sailors died, eleven have been rescued so far, two are still missing. None of the 19 crew of the Hamburg container ship was injured.

On the container ship of the Leonhardt & Blumberg shipping company from Hamburg-Neumühlen, after problems with the steering gear, there was a power cut on board, which caused the ship’s serious accident.

BILD spoke with the shipowner and head of Buss, Johann Killinger (59), in whose shipping group the freighter built in 2013 sails.

According to Killinger, the ship was unable to maneuver after a rudder failure and directly collided with oncoming traffic on the busy shipping lane off the mouth of the Yangtze River.

There, the container ship collided with China’s smallest freighter “Xin Qi Sheng 69”. China’s freighter began to sink immediately!

It was badly damaged and has a hole in the bow that needs to be repaired at a Shanghai shipyard. It is currently not possible to continue your journey. The investigation continues.
