Greta has been one of the most popular girl names in Germany since the 1990s. That is now the end: the name has climbed 97 places in the rankings and is no longer in the top 100 this year.
The Babelli.de portal evaluated about 10 percent of birth notifications from January to December 2020 and created representative statistics. There are new favorites for boys and girls names this year.
Among the girls’ names, Greta (-97 at 128th place), Leni (-12 at 25th place), Lena (-10 at 22nd place) and Anna (-7 at 21st place) have lost popularity.
Patrick Konrad, Director of the Name Study: “The most exciting thing for us was the development of the name Greta. The name is currently as unpopular as it has been in the last 12 years and that is simply due to the strong polarization caused by Greta Thunberg. “
