reThe number of new infections and especially deaths from coronavirus remains at a high level. German health authorities have sent 14,432 new cases and 500 deaths in one day to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the RKI announced Tuesday morning. The 500 deaths are the third highest since the pandemic began.
As of Tuesday of the previous week, it was slightly less with 14,054 new infections and 423 deaths. The highs of 29,875 reported cases and 598 deaths came from Friday.
The value of new infections today is the lowest in a week. In all, there were only three days with fewer than 14,432 new infections in December.
Deaths are increasing
The trend in the number of daily deaths had recently increased, which was also expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 22,475.
The total number of new coronavirus infections in Germany since the start of the pandemic amounted to 1,351,510. The number of those who have recovered is around 1,003,300.
The 7-day incidence, which is crucial to assess the situation, new infections reported per 100,000 population in seven days, decreased slightly. It peaked at 176.4 on Monday. This Tuesday the value fell to 173.7.
In view of the high number of infections and deaths, a new stricter blockade will take effect across the country on Wednesday. According to a resolution from the federal and state governments, most stores must close by at least January 10. The exceptions only apply to supermarkets and some other stores, mainly for daily needs. The federal and state governments are expected to discuss whether the lockdown can be extended on January 5.
