Recently more than 250 infected
Berlin nursing homes affected by outbreaks
There are repeated major outbreaks of the coronavirus in the elderly and nursing homes. More than 250 people are now infected in two facilities in Berlin. To date, 35 have died from the virus. One of the operators suggests how the virus entered the installation.
The capital Berlin is shaken by a series of corona cases in nursing homes: after an outbreak in the Reinickendorf district with more than 100 people infected and 12 deaths, the largest outbreak of the pathogen to date occurs in a nursing home in Berlin-Mitte. In the “Goldenherz” health and care center more than 150 people were infected with the virus, according to the “Tagesspiegel” with reference to the health administration.
As a result, a total of 108 residents and 46 employees were infected. So far, 22 residents and one employee have died with or from a Covid 19 infection. Authorities had already discovered the outbreak in November. After the quarantine for many residents expired on Friday, another 140 residents were tested. However, the results are still pending.
It was previously known that 110 people had already been infected with the corona virus in a nursing home in the Reinickendorf district, including 80 residents and 30 employees. The “Tagesspiegel” also reported on this. So far, twelve people have died with or from the corona virus at this facility.
“Unfortunately, in view of the rapid increase in the spread of the virus, this could not be avoided despite the broad concepts of hygiene, visits and tests,” commented a spokesman for the operator Domicil. Visitors are believed to have brought the virus to the facility. Residents with serious illnesses would be transferred to hospitals, the spokesman said, adding: “If there is still space available.” According to the “Tagesspiegel”, the case was only known because a relative of a deceased reported the newspaper.
Repeated outbreaks in nursing homes
Just last week, a major outbreak was known at a nursing home in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Meanwhile, according to the “Tagesspiegel”, at least 81 people have been infected there. 63 residents and 18 employees were among those who tested positive.
There have been repeated outbreaks in the elderly and nursing homes. The federal-state resolution for the closure as of Wednesday also provides “special protection measures” for these facilities. The federal government must provide medical protective masks and cover the costs of rapid tests. Personnel in care and retirement centers are required to be tested several times a week. If possible, appropriate tests should also be performed with mobile care services. In regions with high caseloads, home visitors must present current corona negative tests.
