New York: man shoots himself outside church in Manhattan – police kill him

In New York, police shot a man who opened fire on the sidelines of a Christmas concert. The man had shot in front of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan on Sunday, but did not injure anyone, as announced by local police chief Dermot Shea. Then, three police officers shot the man at least 15 times, at least one bullet hit him in the head.

A choir had performed Christmas carols in front of the cathedral. Several hundred people attended the concert. A reporter from the AFP news agency who was present said the man suddenly shot himself on the steps of the church as the crowd began to dissolve after the concert. “I just ran for my life,” the reporter said.

According to a photographer for the Reuters news agency, some 15 people were still in the perpetrator’s immediate vicinity when he started shooting. It is said that he screamed “Shoot me” and “Kill me”.

Another witness said the man fired eight to ten shots before he shot himself. The background to the incident is unclear so far. Police found two firearms at the scene. Nearby he also discovered a bag with a full gasoline can, string, wire, and several knives.
