Will the participants come anyway? Dresden and Frankfurt ban demonstrations of “lateral thinking” – politics

Bremen showed the way, Frankfurt and Dresden follow suit. After the Bremen assembly authority banned a demonstration of the “lateral thinking” movement that was heavily publicized in advance for reasons of protection against infection last weekend, other cities are following suit.

Meetings of action skeptics, virus deniers and conspiracy ideologues in Frankfurt am Main and Dresden announced for Saturday have been banned by the respective cities. In both cases, the organizers went to the competent courts to appeal against the cancellation of their meetings.

But both the administrative courts in Frankfurt and Dresden upheld the bans by regulatory authorities in both cities. Now the initiators of “lateral thinking” announced that they would also want to sue at the next level.

In Hesse, the Administrative Court of Kassel is responsible for this, in Saxony the Higher Administrative Court of Bautzen. The same thing caused great discontent in politics and society in early November with a court decision when the Bautzen judges declared a large demonstration permissible in the center of Leipzig.

The trade fair city assembly authority had previously designated the much more spacious exhibition site as a meeting place for the reasons of protection against infection. On November 7, tens of thousands followed the call of the “lateral thinkers” to Leipzig.

There were massive violations of applicable hygiene measures such as keeping distance and the mask requirement. On the sidelines of the meeting, serious clashes sometimes broke out between violent protesters and the police. Several dozen members of the press were the target of hostile attacks on the media.

In the event of a further defeat in the judiciary, the Frankfurt “lateral thinkers” can finally turn to the Federal Constitutional Court. However, last weekend, the Karlsruhe judges confirmed the decision to ban Bremen’s “Mega Advent Demonstration” in an emergency procedure.

In both Hesse and Saxony, the police are preparing with a large contingent for the arrival of possible crown protesters who could take to the streets despite the ban. In particular, the meeting of the Dresden branch “Quer Think 351” at Cockerwiese in the capital of the Saxon state had been heavily announced for weeks.

Unlike Frankfurt, a large number of participants from the right-wing extremist spectrum are expected. For example, groups of cross-border thugs in Czech and even French mobilized for Saturday in Dresden. A call that has been shared hundreds of times on social media bears the name “Hooligans, Nacionalistas, Ultras” and is headed by the title “Anti-Antifa”.

According to their own statements, the Saxon police expect an incident that could not only focus on the original location of Cockerwiesen, but also in the city center of Dresden. The Saxon officials are supported by units from Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, North Rhine-Westphalia and the riot police of the Federal Police. There will also be heavy equipment such as evacuation armor and water cannons in the city area.

Numerous counter-demonstrations in Dresden

Dresden Police Chief Jörg Kubiessa also announced in a press release that they would also be prepared for a possible judicial lifting of the ban on meetings: “If the desired ban on meetings does not last, we are facing a confrontational situation. We separate the different sets and enforce the applicable hygiene regulations In the event that a large part of the meeting participants do not comply with the restrictions and requirements, a resolution will be examined in coordination with the meeting authority.

At the same time, there have been numerous demonstrations by various alliances and parties in the Dresden city area that are directed against the goals of the “lateral thinking” movement. However, for reasons of protection against infection, any meeting is limited to 200 people.

From Saturday, strict departure restrictions apply in the state capital of Saxony. According to the Robert Koch Institute, Dresden had previously exceeded the critical incidence value of 200 for the fifth consecutive day. Saxony is currently the Crown access point of the Federal Republic, many clinics in regions such as Bautzen and Erzgebirge are, according to doctors, close to the limit.
