Member of parliament does rapid tail crown test – allegedly positive

Cola is corona positive? In the Austrian parliament, a member of parliament from the FPÖ dripped Coca-Cola from his glass in a corona quick test. What the positive result really says.

A member of the right-wing populist FPÖ carried out an absurd experiment live at the Austrian National Council. Michael Schnedlitz, FPÖ general secretary, used a Corona quick test on Thursday to sample a Coca-Cola he had brought with him. Because the test strip later changed color, the scene is now triumphantly shared by critics of Corona’s measures.

You can see the strange appearance of the FPÖ politician in our video or above here.

For farmer Schnedlitz, the experiment was proof that rapid tests are not very useful and that mass tests in Austria are a waste of tax money. There is a simple explanation why the test failed. And it has nothing to do with the virus. But it leads to the fact that the next speaker, Alexander Melchior of the ruling ÖVP, scoffed: “I had always hoped this was not a Cola, but a Bacardi-Cola. That would have explained their behavior.”

Color particles discolor stripes

Rapid tests are coated with antibodies to which colored particles are attached. If it finds a SARS-CoV virus or a SARS-CoV2 virus, a reaction occurs with the virus antigens. This makes the color particles visible – the stripe changes color.

This also happens if the antibodies on the test strip are destroyed. And that’s what glue does: with a pH value of 2.5 in classic glue it is very acidic and the antibody is a protein. Protein is attacked by acid. Even then the color becomes visible. So, the politician’s test shows that the tail destroyed the protein.

The scene has been shared many times since then to make the test ridiculous. For example, the AfD member of the Bundestag Stephan Protschka spreads it. He wrote: “Warning! It could change your view of the world!” Users responded that, on the contrary, it confirmed its image of the AfD. On Friday, the leader of the AfD parliamentary group Alice Weidel also shared the video.

Antigen tests – found contagious

In fact, a relatively high proportion of positive antigen test results are false positives. This means that people who are supposedly infected can also be healthy. Therefore, a PCR test is performed. On the contrary, the specificity of the tests is very high. This means: A negative result also means with a very high probability that a person is not contagious or has a very low viral load. That is why they are intended for use in doctor’s offices, rescue centers, kindergartens, schools, as well as nursing homes and retirement homes – they provide quick results for people without symptoms, for those who might not otherwise know. I’d run a PCR test or the result would take too long to arrive. .

Infected people are already contagious a day or two before the onset of symptoms and therefore, according to experts, are responsible for a significant proportion of new infections. SARS-CoV 2 is also so insidious because people who appear healthy can already carry the virus in and out of themselves. These people should be found more often with rapid tests.
