Most Americans have chosen Democrat Joe Biden as the next president of the United States. Still, the incumbent Donald Trump is trying to do everything he can to overturn Biden’s victory on the legal path. All news and updates at a glance:
Katherine Theil is slated to become a US Trade Representative.
Thursday, December 10, 12:58 am: According to various US media, trade expert Katherine Tai will become the trade representative of the Biden government. Tai, who speaks fluent Mandarin and is considered a pragmatic problem solver, faces a big task. Outgoing President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of a series of free trade agreements and waged a trade war with China that was temporarily halted but has yet to be truly resolved.
Tai has previously served as an advisor to a key trade committee in the House of Representatives and has served in China in the office of the United States Trade Representative. For his new position he has to be confirmed by the Senate.
Tax investigation against Joe Biden’s son, Hunter
Wednesday, December 9, 10:25 pm: The Delaware state attorney’s office opened an investigation against Hunter Biden, the son of President-elect Joe Biden. Hunter Biden announced on Wednesday (local time) through his father’s team that his lawyers had been informed of the investigation the previous day by the prosecutor in the US state of Delaware. He took the matter seriously, but was confident that an objective investigation would show that he was not guilty of anything.
The name Hunter Biden had become known internationally on the Ukrainian affair. Between 2014 and 2019 he held a lucrative position on the supervisory board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Outgoing President Donald Trump accused Joe Biden in the election campaign of stopping corruption investigations against Burisma and his son through his influence as then-Vice President of the United States. Trump did not provide any evidence to support these accusations.
The future president had dismissed the attacks against him and his family in the election campaign as a smear campaign. Biden’s team said they were proud of their son. Hunter Biden had to face serious challenges, “including fierce personal attacks in recent months.” He came out of her stronger.
Marcia Fudge to become United States Secretary of Housing, Tom Vilsack Secretary of Agriculture
Wednesday, December 9, 12:27 am: According to various US media, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge will become Minister of Housing and Urban Development in Joe Biden’s cabinet. The Democrat has been a member of the House of Representatives of the US state of Ohio since 2008.
Fudge made a name for himself in the House of Representatives with his work on the Committee on Agriculture. Among other things, his name appeared earlier in connection with the search for candidates for the Ministry of Agriculture. Among other things, Jim Clyburn, a Democratic representative in the House of Representatives, campaigned for them.
Fudge was a fantastic candidate, he had told CNN television. Although he proposed her to the department of agriculture, he was confident that he should get a cabinet seat regardless of Biden’s election to the ministry of agriculture.
In addition, the former Governor of the US state of Iowa, Tom Vilsack, will serve as Secretary of Agriculture in Biden’s cabinet. Vilsack has already served in the Barack Obama administration. Pete Buttigieg, Biden’s former presidential candidate, is under discussion as the new ambassador to China.
Trump camp loses Supreme Court election battle
Tuesday, December 8, 6:30 pm: Donald Trump’s camp suffered another bitter defeat in the legal battle against the lost presidential election, this time before the United States Supreme Court. The Washington Supreme Court rejected this Tuesday night (local time) a motion for precautionary measure with which the Republican Trump and his supporters wanted to annul the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the US state of Pennsylvania. In the short decision, the court did not comment on the reasons. There were also no votes against the nine judges. This means that Trump’s side has so far been unsuccessful in more than 45 legal proceedings. Only in one case, involving a few votes, did Trump’s side win.
Trump has been claiming since the Nov. 3 election that massive fraud stole his victory. So far, neither he nor his lawyers have been able to provide convincing evidence. Attorney General William Barr also said last week that he had no evidence of fraud to the extent that it would alter the outcome.
Pennsylvania had already certified the election result on November 23. The applicants wanted the certification revoked. State attorneys had warned the Supreme Court of such a “dramatic” move. They argued: “No court has issued an order invalidating the governor’s confirmation of the results of a presidential election.”
Texas goes to Supreme Court in Trump election dispute
Tuesday, December 8, 6:30 pm: In the United States, Donald Trump’s camp is making another attempt to challenge the Supreme Court election after dozens of lawsuits dismissed. Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing four other states.
In the lawsuit published Tuesday, he asked that the election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin be invalidated. There, Democratic challenger Joe Biden had secured victory in part long before Trump. It is unclear whether the Washington Supreme Court will accept the lawsuit.
As a motive, Paxton cited that the constitution had been violated in all four states, not least because voters were treated unequally and there were irregularities.
270 of the total 538 electoral votes are required for victory. Biden had 305 voters behind him in the November 3 election. The voting of the electorate, which normally votes according to the results of their states, is scheduled for December 14. However, the so-called Safe Harbor Day, which is the deadline to vote for voters in all 50 states.
Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin combined have about 62 votes, and the lawsuit ultimately over Biden’s takeover. Paxton wants the electorates in these states to be commissioned by local parliaments or not appointed in the first place. Trump has been claiming since the election that massive fraud stole his victory. Neither he nor his lawyers could provide evidence. Since then, lawsuits have been dismissed in various states in more than three dozen cases.
Paxton follows the sometimes adventurous argumentation of the previous demands: The probability of Biden’s electoral victory in all four states is said to be one in a quadrillion. Even before the election, Trump had set out to quickly fill a vacant Supreme Court seat with conservative attorney Amy Coney Barrett, and touched on a possible dispute over the election outcome. Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes.
Biden appoints his defense minister
Tuesday, December 8, 2:54 am: US President-elect Joe Biden wants to fill more key positions with confidants from his time as vice president under former President Barack Obama. Biden has decided to appoint retired General Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense, according to various US media.
Austin, 67, was most recently commander of the US Forces in the Middle East (Centcom) from 2013 until his retirement in 2016 and is thus familiar with today’s hot spots. Centcom is responsible for US operations in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, among others. At the beginning of his career of more than 40 years in the US military, Austin was initially deployed to Germany, according to Centcom.
He would be the first African-American Secretary of Defense in the history of the United States. Austin is considered controversial in some progressive groups, however, as he is on the board of arms manufacturer Raytheon Technologies. Biden had previously announced that he would appoint his new defense minister on Friday.
Biden probably wants Xavier Becerra as health minister
Monday, December 7, 8:05 am: President-elect Joe Biden has apparently chosen Xavier Becerra as his candidate for the post of Minister of Health. This is reported by several US media. California Attorney General Becerra is a strong supporter of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, introduced under President Barack Obama.
Should Becerra be confirmed as Minister of Health by the United States Senate, he would take the lead in the fight against the corona pandemic, which has so far killed more than 280,000 people in the United States. He would be responsible for a ministry with some 80,000 employees and a budget of more than a trillion dollars.
The 62-year-old would be the first Latino to head the Ministry of Health. His mother was born in Jalisco, Mexico. After marrying Becerra’s father, she emigrated to the United States. In addition to fighting pandemics in general, it would be responsible for vaccines and drugs, cutting-edge medical research, and health insurance for more than 130 million Americans.
Under President Donald Trump, the ministry had lost its influence in the Corona crisis. The first warnings from the ministry’s health experts contrasted with Trump’s public assurances that the virus was under control, sparking financial market turmoil. Trump has repeatedly accused ministry scientists of being politically motivated.
As attorney general, Becerra led a coalition of Democratic states against recent attempts by the Donald Trump administration to topple Obamacare. Without the law, more than 23 million people would be left without insurance, in addition to millions with previous illnesses who could be denied insurance. A Supreme Court ruling is expected in 2021.
Becerra sat in the California House of Representatives until his inauguration as attorney general in 2017. During this time he participated in the passage of the law by the United States Congress in 2009 and 2010. At that time, he told the media that his main motivation was tens of thousands of uninsured Americans in his constituency. Overseeing the crown’s fight against the pandemic would be the biggest task in Becerra’s political career to date.
