In Venice, the “Mose” flood protection system was put into operation after the floods. As the city also reported, a sea level of up to 125 centimeters above normal was expected for the morning. “Mose” is a flood gate system that supposedly protects the city from storm surge.

On Tuesday, among other things, the famous St. Mark’s Square in the port city was under water, people waded knee-deep in the waves. Sometimes red and therefore the highest notification level applied to Venice. On Wednesday morning, the footage finally showed that the water in St. Mark’s Square had largely receded.

The level increased more than expected

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro announced that “Moisés” was not active on Tuesday. At night he confirmed that the system should start.

Driven by strong Croatian winds, levels had risen more sharply than previously assumed, the mayor had justified the belated protective measure. “For the activation of ‘Moses’ you need more time and also a prediction with more time”.

The “Mose” flood protection system was recently put into operation. It consists of 78 mobile protective walls at the entrances to the lagoon. The barriers are at the bottom of the sea when the water level is normal, but they can be raised and withstand a rise in level of three meters. In November 2019, Venice suffered the worst flood in more than 50 years.
