US Supreme Court rejects Trump camp complaint

The American president does not recognize his electoral defeat. To fight the result, his team even went to the Supreme Court. But Trump has now suffered a serious legal setback there.

Donald Trump’s side suffered another defeat in the legal battle against the lost presidential election, this time in the United States Supreme Court. The Washington Supreme Court rejected this Tuesday night (local time) a motion for precautionary measure with which the Republican Trump and his supporters wanted to annul the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the US state of Pennsylvania. In the short decision, the court did not comment on the reasons. There were also no votes against the nine judges.

Trump has been claiming since the Nov. 3 election that massive fraud stole his victory. So far, neither he nor his lawyers have been able to provide convincing evidence. Since then, lawsuits have been dismissed in various states in more than three dozen cases. Attorney General William Barr also said last week that he had no evidence of fraud to the extent that it would alter the outcome.

Pennsylvania had already certified the election result on November 23. The applicants wanted the certification revoked. State attorneys had warned the Supreme Court against such a “dramatic” move. They argued: “No court has issued an order invalidating the governor’s confirmation of the results of a presidential election.”

A total of four lawsuits before the Supreme Court

Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton had sued four states. In the lawsuit published Tuesday, he called for the election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin to be invalidated. There, Democratic challenger Joe Biden had secured victory against Trump.

The reason given by Paxton was that the constitution had been violated in all four states, among other things because voters were not treated equally and there were irregularities. The president of the United States is not chosen directly by the people, but by 538 voters who usually vote according to the result in their states. 270 votes are required for victory. Biden had 305 voters behind him in the November 3 election. Voting by the electorate is scheduled for December 14.

“Really embarrassing regret”

Even before the election, Trump had set out to quickly fill a vacant Supreme Court seat with conservative attorney Amy Coney Barrett, and touched on a possible dispute over the election outcome. Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes. However, the Trump camp’s previous lawsuits were equally dismissed by justices, regardless of whether they were nominated by Democratic or Republican presidents.

Those responsible in the affected states were tough on the lawsuit. Paxton’s Wiscosin counterpart, Josh Kaul, spoke on Twitter of a “really shameful lawsuit.” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel noted that the lawsuit’s arguments had already been dismissed by several courts. Therefore, this is just a “public relations joke”.
