Everyone is talking about the charging infrastructure, there should be a million public charging points in Germany by 2030. We should all switch to cars without internal combustion engines as soon as possible. How should that work?
It’s actually pretty simple: the more charging points there are, the more attractive the region will be for the switch to electric cars. Currently, the average is 1,486 per charging station.
“There are currently an average of around 1,500 vehicles at a public electronic charging point. This proportion has to decrease in order to make the region more attractive for the switch to electric mobility ”, says Hildegard Müller, president of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA).

According to this, for example, the 13,239 electric cars registered in Berlin share 1,192 charging points, an average of 11.1 cars per charging station.
In the city of Krefeld, things are looking bleak. Only 5 charging stations, 993 electric cars, make a partial share of 198.6.
In Ingolstadt, Audi’s hometown, 41 electric cars share a charging station, in Stuttgart 87.7, in Munich 12.7.
Goal: one million charging points by 2030
The federal government’s “Master Plan Charging Infrastructure” sets the goal of one million public charging points by 2030. “To achieve the goal set by the state, about 2,000 new public charging points will be required each week. However, currently only around 200 new charging points are being installed in the public area, ”says Müller.
Germany is already the European champion for electric cars. Today, there are 50,000 new electric cars on the road every month. “The Ladenetz ranking is an incentive for all municipalities to take the matter actively and generates important transparency. From now on, district administrators and mayors must be measured by these numbers, ”said the president of the VDA.
There are currently 32110 public charging points in Germany (source: Federal Network Agency, as of November 5, 2020). Individuals have not yet been centrally registered. Müller finally asks for changes here too: “Now the registration of private charging points in homes must be configured. The figures can best be provided by the energy industry. “
