The shots rang out near Kurfürstendamm early Sunday morning. A day later, the alleged perpetrator reported it to the police. Was the attack racially motivated?

Several men were shot by a stranger at a street meeting in Charlottenburg early Sunday morning. In the evening, the alleged perpetrator appeared in Hamburg, as reported by the Berlin police on Monday.

Shortly after midnight on Saint Nicholas Day, a BMW, a Mercedes and a Smart pulled up to the edge of the lane on Nürnberger Strasse. According to the police report, several men got out of the cars and saluted. A man then approached on foot and is said to have fired several shots with a “slashing weapon” at the men from the sidewalk and driveway. The shooter then fled in the direction of Tauentzienstrasse.

Suspect shows up in Hamburg

On Sunday night, a man appeared before the Davidwache on the Hamburg Reeperbahn and said he had shot in Berlin. Officers arrested the suspect. The Berlin police state security is investigating a possible xenophobic background to the crime.

The Berlin media had previously speculated that it could have been a closure between clans. According to the newspaper “Bild”, the occupants of the vehicles belonged to a large Arab family.

Apparently, initially those attacked also fled on foot. A little later, the police ran into the driver of the BMW and the Smart. The two 28-year-olds were unable to provide any information about the incident and who was involved, he said.
