Jens Spahn speculates on tougher corona measures

The Chancellor had just spoken about possible “additional measures” in winter. Now the CDU Minister of Health has also expressed himself in this direction. Jens Spahn does not rule out tightening the crown restrictions due to the high number of infections.

If the numbers don’t go down by Christmas, “then we have to discuss it,” Spahn told the Phoenix station Monday. He advocated taking tougher action for a shorter period of time. “The short, broader approach to really making a difference is probably the most successful.”

A new retail closure may also be necessary, Spahn said. “We have to make that depend on the next few days if we can reduce the numbers.” In the future, federal states would continue to search for individual concepts, which he believes to be correct due to different incidence figures. “We have to take different measures in Saxony than in Schleswig-Holstein if we want to maintain acceptance,” the Health Minister said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) points to an agreement on further steps to contain the corona pandemic before Christmas. With the measures taken so far, the stagnant number of infections cannot be brought down to too high a level, Merkel said in a video conference with the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

Saxony could enter into lockdown from December 14

According to a report in the daily “Bild”, the Federal Chancellery plans to considerably toughen the crown measures as of December 27. Consequently, all stores in Germany should close at least on January 3, with the exception of food retail. To enforce the rules, the Chancellery wants to organize a Prime Minister’s Conference this week.

Very soon, according to media reports, the state of Saxony could dare to go ahead and declare a strict blockade. Citing government circles, the »Bild« reports that closing stores is being discussed as of December 14. As in spring, only essential stores should remain open. It is not yet clear what exactly these are besides grocery stores. Saxon government spokesman Ralph Schreiber did not initially confirm the reports. He noted that the cabinet wanted to meet Tuesday to discuss the crown’s toughest protection measures.
