While the Economy Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU) has already spoken of a step-by-step plan to relax the crown’s measures, Stephan Weil (SPD) makes it clear: Lower Saxony is still a long way from this.

“The time will certainly come when we can talk about easing,” Lower Saxony’s prime minister said Sunday night in NDR’s regional magazine Hallo Niedersachsen. Then, as in the spring in Lower Saxony, it will happen again in stages. “But we still have a lot of work to do before then.” Looking to the weekend, it is clear that the numbers “have not developed as we would like”.

Because: “It has to go down significantly by Christmas”

Currently 16,297 people are infected with the corona virus in Lower Saxony, 952 are being treated in hospitals. “We are not dissatisfied with the figures for last week,” Weil said. Lower Saxony was doing better than the national average. “We have significantly less than half the infections per capita than in Bavaria.” However, it does not go as fast as expected.

On a low in the new year

“We have to come back clearly before Christmas and see how we get through the holiday season. So we have a reliable outlook for next year,” Weil continued. If Lower Saxony went low, then hopefully we could talk about relaxation soon. “If we’re much beyond that, it won’t work anytime soon.”

On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Althusmann told the German Press Agency: “As I imagine it will be during the period until March, we should allow for the relaxation step by step when the number of infections falls below a seven-day incidence of 35.” , said. Follow. “Our goal is to have an incidence of 50 new infections per 100,000 people nationwide in seven days, preferably well below 35.” When this objective is reached, relaxation measures should be initiated quickly, for example for the catering and accommodation sectors.

Because about a possible relaxation: “Have experience of spring”

But this “class goal”, as Weil calls it, is still a long way off, the Prime Minister said. You are not currently making the progress you need to make. Plans for gradual relaxation would have to be discussed with each other with a view to concrete development. “Basically, we have the experience of spring. We know where the risk of infection is low. You can start with that. Where it is bigger, it can only come later.”

Althusmann: Meaningful relaxation at Easter?

Althusmann had previously been more specific about it, saying, for example, that zoos, amusement and animal parks, beauty salons, and perhaps fitness studios could also be reopened in the early relaxation stage. “If we can do that in January, we will have a clear relaxation at Easter and companies can then take a deep breath,” he said. This is a “smart outlook for spring 2021”. “As soon as we recognize that the infection rate is decreasing, the step-by-step plan will have to be followed in reverse,” Althusmann said with a view to the recently tightened corona restrictions gradually.

Diseases are important too

As with the easing in May this year, the food and hotel industry should start, according to Althusmann. However, ultimately, the decisive factor for relaxation is not only a permanent decrease in the number of infections, but also the onset of the disease, which is staggered over time. Lower Saxony was the first federal state to precede the first wave of infections with a relaxation plan that was presented in early May and provided for a gradual withdrawal of restrictions.
