The Washington Post posed this very simple question to the 249 Republicans who represent the party in the Senate or House of Representatives by email or phone. The low response speaks volumes about the current political situation in America, where Donald Trump appeared in front of an audience in Georgia for the first time since his electoral defeat, with his own mix of contradictory and false gestures, of boasting and threatening.
The Washington Post received only 29 responses to its question about the winner, the newspaper reports, although 25 reporters participated in the investigations. So the answer was Joe Biden 27 times and Donald Trump twice. 220 of the politicians consulted preferred not to answer the question at all or not to commit.
“Eighty-eight percent of Republicans in Congress just don’t say who won the election,” summarizes the newspaper’s poll, which was shared by many people on social media over the weekend. According to the Washington Post, even public statements by politicians were included in the result and not just explicit comments about the newspaper’s poll.
Who would recognize Biden as president?
Hardly any senior Republicans wanted to commit to another question posed by the Washington Post: When faced with the choice of whether to support or criticize Donald Trump’s continued attempt to win the election, only 17 of them responded politically solicited. Nine positioned themselves against Trump’s attempt to question the election result, eight voted in favor of Trump. Reporters did not receive clear answers 232 times.
Finally, the third and final question from the newspaper was whether Republicans in Congress would accept Joe Biden as the legally elected President of the United States if he won a majority in the Electoral College. Here 32 Senate and House politicians said “yes,” and two more “no,” presumably the same two as when asked about the winner of the election.
How is it possible that so few Republicans even want to comment on the election results? The Washington Post interprets the results of its poll as a sign of how great the fear of many MPs and senators about the power of Donald Trump and his influence in the party is.
