Water cannons against snowballs on the A49

In the case of protests against the deforestation of the Dannenröder forest due to the extension of the motorway, clashes reappear. Despite the low temperatures, the police used water cannons against the protesters. According to the information, they also use force.

In the Dannenröder forest, opponents of the expansion have once again built barricades and burned pyrotechnics. According to the police, around 250 activists blocked, among other things, the emergency and rescue routes of an adjacent logistics warehouse. The officers used water cannons despite the low temperatures and removed obstacles sometimes one meter high. “There were several arrests during the day,” police said at night. Among other things, the emergency services were insulted and stoned with a nail board. Six people have been arrested.

The protesters had been pushed aside, a police spokesman said in the afternoon. At the same time, the police prohibited the activists from throwing snowballs and threatened to use the water cannon again. A spokesperson justified the order with a possible risk of injury to officers. It was not initially clear if there were actually injuries.

For more than a year, environmental and climate protectors have been holding out in the forest near Homberg / Ohm in Vogelsbergkreis to oppose the clearing necessary for the expansion of the controversial Autobahn 49, which is now nearing completion. The A49 connects Kassel and Gießen more directly.
