Incidence dropped dramatically
Spain celebrates the decline in crown figures

The corona pandemic hits Spain especially hard. Therefore, the government is introducing strict measures. Now they are having an effect: the incidence in Spain is now lower than in Germany. But despite the relaxation, the restrictions remain in effect during the holidays.

The former Corona España hotspot is celebrating considerable success in fighting the virus. The number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days remained below the 100 mark for the first time in two months. This incidence in seven days is now 98.56, the Ministry of Health in Madrid reported on Friday night. For comparison: according to the Robert Koch Institute, this value in Germany was just under 135 on Friday.

Spain now has one of the lowest incidents in Europe, wrote the daily “El País”. The value could be cut in half in a month. On November 4 it was 236. The number of admissions of Covid 19 patients to intensive care units in seven days dropped from 382 to 210 during the same period. On Friday, only about 24 percent of intensive care places were occupied by Covid patients, compared with a good 29 percent in early November.

Despite all the joy, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo warned the country’s 47 million citizens against neglect. One must “move as little as possible”. This also applies to public holidays on Monday and Tuesday, as well as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The socialist politician gives a good example: “For the first time in my life I will not be in my (Andalusian) town Cabra for Christmas. But the sacrifice is worth it.”

The traditional New Year’s Eve celebration in the famous Puerta del Sol in the center of the capital, where thousands of people usually gather, has to be canceled this time. The Community of Madrid has banned celebrations in public places this year, as announced by the regional health authority. The popular equestrian parade to welcome the Magi, traditionally held on January 5, has also been significantly restricted. According to the authority, it must take place in a designated area in front of a seated audience. Other measures include a limited number of participants for the Christmas markets.

Health Minister Salvador Illa announced that the national vaccination campaign would begin in January. Between 15 and 20 million residents are expected to be vaccinated in May or June. Vaccination in Spain will be voluntary and free.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, almost 1.7 million infections from the corona virus have been recorded in Spain. More than 46,000 people died with Covid-19. 8,745 new infections and 214 new deaths were reported on Friday, the lowest number since late October. Between December 23 and January 6, citizens can only leave their respective residential area in exceptional cases. You will be able to cross regional borders for family reunions.
