There are no construction stops at the “Gorch Fock”. Cologne’s administrative courts ruled on Friday that work on the sailing training ship can continue. You should make a final decision.

The installation of teak on the training ship “Gorch Fock” does not have to stop immediately until a decision has been made in an urgent judicial process. The Cologne Administrative Court decided in an alleged provisional decision, as a spokeswoman announced on Friday.

Illegal tropical timber from Myanmar?

The case concerns allegations that illegal tropical timber from Myanmar is being used during the ongoing renovation of the “Gorch Fock”. The applicant in Cologne is Deutsche Naturschutzring. According to the court, a request had been made for the judges to order the immediate stoppage of work on the ship, even before making a decision in the urgent process underway. This was initially rejected

Much of the wood has already been built in

The court gave two arguments for this: First, the installation of the wood is not necessarily irreversible. On the other hand, according to the available information, a large part of the wood has already been used. The Higher Administrative Court, which shortly thereafter dealt with a complaint against the Cologne decision, supported the decision. The complaint was dismissed.

WWF wants to examine the allegations

The environmental organization WWF, which has dealt with the matter in the case, wants to continue investigating the allegations. Regardless of the urgent request, work at the Lürssen shipyard in Bern on the Unterweser continued: “The installation of the teak on deck is in progress,” a Navy spokesman said on Thursday.

Shipyards are probably not involved

In the case of the use of the controversial timber, the shipyards involved obviously cannot be blamed, as the Bundeswehr is said to have ordered the timber from the Harburg district importer. The “Gorch Fock” made headlines because of the exorbitant increase in renovation costs from initially € 10 million to € 135 million. The “Gorch Fock” is scheduled to set sail again at the end of May 2021.

Hardly any German ship is better known than the “Gorch Fock”. Starting in 1959, the naval training ship traveled the seas: its renovation turned into a debacle. plus
