Stahlknecht dismissed as Minister of the Interior of Saxony-Anhalt

Holger Stahlknecht (CDU) is no longer Minister of the Interior of Saxony-Anhalt. As announced by the State Chancellery on Friday, Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (also CDU) prematurely removed Stahlknecht from office. This was preceded by an interview in a newspaper in which Stahlknecht had mentioned a minority government led by the CDU in case the coalition broke down over the dispute over the increase in the radio license fee.

The statement from the State Chancellery indicated that the main reason for the dismissal was that the minister had “uncoordinated” and publicly threatened to break the coalition and put a minority government led by the CDU into play. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Haseloff is trying to stabilize the 2016 coalition of the CDU, SPD and Greens.

The trust relationship required for this, which is particularly necessary in the management of the Interior Ministry, has been so severely disturbed by Mr. Stahlknecht’s approach that he can no longer belong to the state government.

The head of the green country, Sebastian Striegel, wrote on Twitter that the removal of Stahlknecht only heralded the next round in the CDU power struggle.
